Juana Esperanza and her family live in the city of Portoviejo,. It was struck by an earthquake on April 16, 2016. The city is an important producer of greens, vegetables and topical fruit for domestic consumption.

At her house Juana Esperanza has a small snack bar where she works every day making plantain chips. She sells them to customers who come to buy and at times makes deliveries to homes. She also sells cheese.
